Unveiling the Origins of Absence with Grace Carter
Founder, Grace Carter and Family
In this exclusive Q&A session, we sit down with Grace Carter, the visionary founder behind House of Absence, to uncover the inspiration behind the brand's signature aesthetic and how it reflects her lifestyle.
Q: What inspired you to create House of Absence, and what does the aesthetic represent to you?
A: House of Absence was born out of my passion for minimalist design and refined elegance. I've always believed that less is more when it comes to creating a harmonious and tranquil living space. The aesthetic represents a lifestyle of simplicity, sophistication, and mindfulness – it's about surrounding oneself with beauty and intentionality.
Q: How does the House of Absence aesthetic reflect your personal lifestyle and values?
A: The House of Absence aesthetic is a reflection of my own lifestyle and values. I believe in the power of simplicity and how it can enhance our well-being and quality of life. My home is a sanctuary where I seek refuge from the chaos of the outside world, and the aesthetic reflects that – it's about creating a space that feels calm, serene, and welcoming. Over the years as I’ve developed this style I’ve found it easier and natural to create. We moved home and unpacking and decorating where so much more straight forward than our previous relocation. I have a young family so I both value my time and the environment I want them to grow up in.
Q: Can you share a bit about your journey in developing the House of Absence aesthetic?**
A: Developing the House of Absence aesthetic has been a journey of self-discovery and experimentation. It's about finding beauty in the absence of clutter and noise, and embracing the purity of minimalist design. I drew inspiration from my travels, nature, and everyday life, refining the aesthetic over time to reflect my personal style and values.
Q: How do you envision customers incorporating the House of Absence aesthetic into their own homes?
A: I envision customers incorporating the House of Absence aesthetic into their homes in a way that reflects their own unique style and personality. Whether it's through statement furniture pieces, chic accessories, or thoughtful decor accents, the aesthetic can be adapted to suit a variety of design preferences and lifestyles.
It's about creating a space that feels authentic and true to oneself, the key is to keep within the colour pallete.
Q: What advice would you give to someone looking to embrace the House of Absence aesthetic in their own home?
A: My advice would be to start small and focus on quality over quantity. Choose pieces that resonate with you on a deeper level and bring joy to your space. Embrace the beauty of simplicity and allow each element to breathe and shine on its own. And most importantly, don't be afraid to experiment and make the aesthetic your own – it's about creating a space that reflects who you are and what you love. I have collected pieces from across the world which also hold sentimental value and bring me joy to look at on reflection.
Q: Can you tell us more about any unique pieces or special projects that have been particularly meaningful to you?
A: One project that holds a special place in my heart is designing wallpaper for my children's rooms. As a mother, creating a space where my children can feel safe, inspired, and nurtured is incredibly important to me. I wanted to design wallpaper that would reflect their personalities and interests while still fitting within the House of Absence aesthetic. It was a wonderful opportunity to blend my love for design with my role as a parent, and seeing the joy on my children's faces when they saw their rooms transformed was truly priceless. It's these personal touches and meaningful projects that remind me of the power of design to shape our lives and create lasting memories.
As we conclude our insightful conversation with Grace Carter, it's clear that the House of Absence aesthetic is more than just a design choice – it's a lifestyle philosophy that celebrates simplicity, sophistication, and mindful living. Through her vision and passion, Grace has created a brand that inspires others to embrace the beauty of absence and create spaces that nurture the soul.
